HISTORICAL CHARACTERS FOR 2021

Margaret Lewis Livingston (1780-1860): A prominent member of New York City and Hudson Valley society, Margaret was the daughter and only child of the third governor of New York, General Morgan Lewis, and great grandmother of Margaret Lewis Morgan Norrie.

Margaret Lewis Morgan Norrie (1869-1927): A suffragist and advocate of social reform. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park in Staatsburg is named for her.

Walter Langdon (1823-1894): A grandson of John Jacob Astor, Walter owned the property that became the Vanderbilt estate and donated the organs at St. James’ Church in memory of his wife, Catherine.

WWI Senior Staff Nurse and Nursing Arts Instructor: A Vassar Hospital Training School Graduate, she responded to the Red Cross Appeal for nurses before America entered the war. She went to Europe with a Base Hospital Unit from Massachusetts General Hospital (a complete portable hospital) but was seconded to a Casualty Station in France with the British Expeditionary Forces.

Dr. Victor Vance Anderson (1878-1960): Founder of the Anderson School in Staatsburg, now the Anderson Center for Autism. His school prepared children with mental and emotional problems for life as adults.

Douglas Crapser (1894 – 1982): Douglas was the private chauffeur and personal bodyguard for Frederick Vanderbilt for 18 years.

Tickets are $20 Adults; $10 Children 12 and under. Price includes all fees. All major credit cards accepted for online orders.

If you are unable to purchase your tickets using our online system, please call the parish office at 845-229-2820. A limited number of phone-in orders can be accommodated per tour, payable in advance by check or cash only.

Questions about tours or ticket orders can only be handled during office hours: Tuesday – Friday from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm.

All orders are final. We regret we are unable to hold spaces without payment.

All proceeds benefit the on-going ministry and outreach of St. James’ Episcopal Church.

LIMITED MOBILITY INFO

This is a walking tour with limited lighting conducted off-path through our 200-yr. old churchyard. Unfortunately, it is not appropriate for wheelchairs, strollers, or walkers.

FOR MOBILITY CHALLENGED INDIVIDUALS: A GOLF CART WILL BE AVAILABLE AT NO EXTRA CHARGE FOR THE 6:30 AND 8:00 TOURS. RESERVE THRU THE OFFICE ONLY. One adult needs to accompany a child using this service.

TOUR DETAILS

All attendees will be obligated to wear a mask during the tour. No exceptions. This is to protect the health of unvaccinated children under 13 and also those who health is compromised or are unable to take the vaccine. We will have masks to hand out to any guests who forget to bring their masks. Actors will be vaccinated but need not wear masks.

Free Parking. Tailgaters welcome!

The tour is an hour long, rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, a cancellation notice will be posted on the website with a make-up date.

Suitable for ages 5 and over. We offer family-friendly living history tours, with tour guides and actors dressed in period costume. These are not haunted tours and are not meant to be scary.

Please wear clothing and shoes appropriate to the weather and the terrain. October evenings can get cold, and the ground is uneven.

NO PETS. Service animals only.

No Flash Photography. Flashlights are welcome.
